Formula and Human Milk Technician

Job Description:
Formula Tech performs a variety of tasks related to the preparation and delivery of formula and human milk orders including, but not limited to: use of patient electronic medical record to process orders; verification of products & order volumes; calculation of feeding; order preparation & delivery; processing of human milk (skimming or pasteurizing donor human milk); product inventory and stocking of designated supply areas; ware washing; general cleaning; waste stream management; and maintenance of required records.

Adheres to standards of food safety and sanitation; regulatory standards; departmental and hospital policies and procedures in the execution of assigned duties.

Job Functions:
Responsible for personal record of shift start & end time utilizing official time and attendance system. Arrive prepared to begin work in approved uniform and CHOP ID.
Completes all duties of task assignment and verifies completion with manager or lead tech before clocking- out at end of shift.
Assures accurate and timely completion and delivery of feeding orders. Proactively communicates any concerns that may cause delay or interruption in service.
Communicates with manager, ordering clinician and/or Registered Dietitians (RD) regarding patient formula and/or human milk orders that require clarification or substitution.
Assists in training other employees in formula and human milk preparation and proper techniques as needed.
Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
Adheres to requirements for infection prevention including hand-washing before and after donning or changing PPE; clean and sanitize work area at start and end of shift : in addition to as needed.
Maintains food safety & sanitation standards at all times. Follows requirement for sealing, labelling, dating and proper storage of all products. Rotate product on a FIFO (first in : first out) basis and promptly remove any identified expired or damaged product from inventory/service.
Completes required records as per task assignment which may include, but not limited to patient orders & calculations; donor milk usage; dish machine temperatures; eye wash check; scheduled cleaning; etc.
Assures the proper breaking down of cardboard boxes and the disposal of landfill, bottles and cans in appropriate waste stream as prescribed by the dept. and hospital.
Practices safety behavior for error prevention : pay attention to detail, communicate clearly, practice with a questioning attitude : especially when reading, clarifying, calculating, transcribing, preparing, and delivering patient specific enteral feeding orders.
Uses all chemicals only according to manufacturer directions and for defined purposes.
Immediately reports unsafe condition or faulty equipment to manager/supervisor.
Reports all work related accidents/injury to manager as soon as the event occurs and completes required documentation.
Adheres to proper equipment handling and safe lifting, pushing and pulling techniques.
Consistently follows CHOP Service Standards to create an environment in which families, patients, and staff feel welcomed, respected and confident in receiving the highest level of care and service.
Maintains compliance with all requirements of Federal, State and local regulations and guidelines including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended.

Required Experience:
Experience working in a hospital setting; in food and or nutrition services or other relevant allied health position or similar job experience
 
Preferred Experience:
Pharmacy, Diet Tech or formula/human milk preparation experience in a pediatric environment

Required Certifications:
Serv Safe Certification (SSC) from the National Restaurant Association (NRA), within one year of hire date

Preferred Certifications:
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
Dietetic Technician-Registered (DTR) issued by the Commission on Dietetic Registration"

Certification: Certified Pharmacy Technician , Dietetic Technician-Registered
